A True Story of an African Record-Breaker

He was born premature, weighing just over 1kg, with the doctors saying he might end up disabled.

22 years later, Wayde Van Niekerk, the South African sprinter would break the world record in the 400-meter race at the 2016 Rio Olympics. He finished in 43.03 seconds, breaking Michael Johnson’s 43.18 record.

A record that stood for 17 years.

Wayde’s journey shows that with passion, determination, and taking the step, Africans can achieve incredible feats and make a mark on the world stage.

Now, let’s dive into our journey of breaking a world record!

Here’s how it Started.

On March 3, 2024, Abuja Culinary School made history!

We hosted an incredible event celebrating African gastronomy with a fantastic jollof rice cook-off between top chefs from Nigeria and Ghana.

We aimed to break the Guinness World Record for the most tickets booked for an online cooking tutorial, and we did it! With 9,008 tickets booked, smashing the previous record of 4,208 held by Marks and Spencer since April 23, 2021.

Setting the Stage

Abuja Culinary School is more than just a culinary school, we promote African cuisine and culinary excellence.

We’re known as the best culinary school in Abuja and one of the finest in Nigeria. We love sharing the rich flavors of African food with the world.

And what better way to do that than with jollof rice, a beloved West African dish that symbolizes cultural pride and culinary artistry?

The Jollof Rice Tutorial

The showdown was amazing! We had two incredible chefs: Chef Stylz from Nigeria and Chef Kwame from Ghana. They both brought their unique twist to the classic jollof rice recipe, making the event even more exciting.

The event was held at the Abuja Continental Hotel, which generously supported us. The atmosphere was electric with live dance performances and vibrant cultural displays.

Our online audience was super engaged, sharing comments, and making the event interactive and fun.

The Guinness World Record Attempt

We meticulously planned the record-breaking attempt to ensure maximum participation.

People from all over the world joined the live tutorial to learn the secrets of perfect jollof rice from our expert chefs.

The anticipation was intense as ticket bookings soared, driven by a shared love for African cuisine and the desire to support Abuja Culinary School’s historic effort.

With 9,008 tickets booked, we officially broke the previous record!

Celebrating African Cuisine

This event was more than just a record attempt; it was a celebration of African cuisine’s diversity and richness.

Preserving culinary traditions and passing them down to future generations is essential, and events like this highlight their importance.

Food has the incredible ability to bridge cultures and foster understanding. The Embassy of Sweden even attended to show their support, underscoring the global recognition of African culinary arts.

Our jollof rice showdown was a joyous celebration of African heritage, bringing our delicious recipes to a global audience.

Why Should African Gastronomy Be Celebrated?

You might wonder why celebrating African gastronomy is so important. Well, here’s why:

  • Cultural Preservation: African recipes are handed down through generations, preserving history and heritage. Celebrating these dishes ensures these traditions remain alive and are passed on to future generations.
  • Diverse Flavors: African cuisine offers a wide range of unique and bold flavors that are unlike any other in the world. From the spicy stews of West Africa to the aromatic dishes of North Africa, African food is a culinary adventure worth exploring.
  • Economic Empowerment: Showcasing African gastronomy can boost local economies by promoting food tourism and supporting local farmers, chefs, and food entrepreneurs.
  • Cultural Exchange: Food is a universal language that brings people together. Celebrating African cuisine fosters cultural exchange and understanding, breaking down barriers and building connections between people from different backgrounds.

Conclusion

Just like Wayde’s incredible journey of breaking records, our achievement at Abuja Culinary School is a testament to the power of passion and dedication.

The jollof rice showdown was a huge success, promoting African gastronomy and breaking records.

We’re so grateful to the chefs, team, participants, supporters, Abuja Continental Hotel, and the Embassy of Sweden for making this event possible.

With our new Guinness World Record, we’re looking forward to more culinary celebrations and continuing to share the vibrant flavors of Africa with the world.

Abuja Culinary School’s record-breaking event marks a significant milestone in the journey of African cuisine, proving that our rich culinary heritage deserves to be celebrated and enjoyed by all. Cheers to many more delicious adventures ahead!
